Some Common Game Characteristics

Some of the common characteristics of games are:

  • The number of participants can vary and they cater for large groups. Some games become unwieldy if more than twelve or fifteen play, but even for these the upper limit is flexible.
  • The players can often participate at different levels.
  • Good games have a variety of ways to play along and contribute (so that everyone can join in and enjoy them)
  • Many games are mainly non-competitive. For example murder mystery games which are mainly group role plays.
  • Often Games are not restricted to location, they can be played inside ( indoor ) and outside ( outdoor )
Activity / Game

A game is generally defined as a structured/semi-structured activity. These games / activities are undertaken for enjoyment and often used as an educational tool by parents/teachers. Key components of an activity /games are rules, goals and a winner. The game is often a challenging and/or interactive activity. Games tend to involve mental and/or physical stimulation which is beneficial in helping develop skills, encourage exercise and educate the participants.

Large group games are those which are those played with a large number of participants. These group games are used as planned activities in environments such as school, party (party games), youth groups and social gatherings.

Games are also often used as a team building exercise. If you search the internet for team building games you will return thousands of links to exercises, companies, and all kinds of offerings ranging from paintball to fire walking (although depending on the occasion a simple group game can be a great form of team building in itself).

Many of the games on this site are group games that can be used as Party Games, School Games, Youth Group Activities and Social Games. Ranging from Indoor Games to Outside Activities.

Passing By

An amusement for children on a train, or at home when it is raining, is the following, and it will help to while away the time.If there are several children, choose sides and appoint one to keep the count for his side. Each side sits by a different window and watches the passers-by. Every man counts 1; every women 2; baby 3; animal 5; white horse 10; black cat 50.As a child sees someone passing, he calls out the number for his side; if a woman, he says 2; if a man and woman together, it will be 3, and so on.If the children are looking upon the same street the side that calls its number out first adds it to its score. It is more exciting if the different sides have different streets to look out on.If on a train, one side sits on the right and the other on the left, and when an object is seen, they call out right, 5, or left, as the case may be, for the mother, or older person to put down on the score card. The side which succeeds in reaching 100 first is the winning side. If the trip is long, 500 can be the limit.
